Yorkshire was found with a light blanket of white as the long awaited snowfall finally began today in the late hours of the evening. Last night, the temperatures had plummeted to -2 and -4 degrees Celsius. Black ice was already spotted by Yorkshire’s population this morning, some discovering the perils of the ice the hard way, slipping as they stepped outside for work and other activities.

For the last few days, the temperature was pulsing up and down between 0 and 2 degrees Celsius. This morning, for the first time this winter, there was ice on Yorkshire’s roads. Many people were reported to queue in hospitals to examine injuries caused by the ice. Many minor road accidents between cars and public transport was also reported. Today, the clouds broke and the snow began to fall at approximately 5 o clock in the evening.

There was a prohibitive amount of snow in the hilly areas, especially Keighley, Skipton, Ilkley, and Crosshills. The Met Office has given a yellow warning to “be aware” of snow and ice. The warning is in place until mid-morning on Sunday. The Met Office has three categories for its warnings – red, amber and yellow – with red as the most severe. It said less cold conditions should start to develop during Sunday, allowing some snow to start melting.
